- Auburn coach discusses upcoming 2020 season, the importance of the coaches prepping players to react quickly
- Pandemic has added elements to recruiting, such as social media and zoom, that may into the future
- Practice consists of walkthroughs as players perfect plays until full training schedule starts
Auburn’s upcoming football season and training plans were key to this week’s the JBoy Show podcast featuring Auburn’s outside linebackers coach Al Pogue (http://nnw.fm/tkQeE). Hosted by football enthusiast and SEC expert Jake Crain, the podcast also touched on players, coaches and the work ethic that Auburn is bringing to the season.
Going into the 2020 season, Pogue shared that Auburn has the tools for a great season. Pogue noted that the players and coaches believe they are up for the task, will put their head down and will deliver the Auburn tight defense that the fans are accustomed to. “Playing with relentless effort is nonnegotiable,” said Pogue. “That starts with our leader Coach Steele and everyone being on the same page with that.”
Defensively the team always has enough to be prepared, Pogue noted. The coaches do the thinking, and the players do the reacting. Defensive coach Kevin Steele puts together plans that allow the players to react quickly, said Steele, and the players invest time in studying those plays and are ready when its time to put those plans into action.
The conversation also touched on to the pandemic. Social media and Zoom have been the windows that have allowed the program to continue recruiting. Pogue shared that he sees the incorporation of Zoom into recruiting efforts moving forward, even after the pandemic eases. It has opened up the opportunity to bring the program to student athletes — and those who support those athletes — who cannot make it to campus.
Recruiting is about relationships, stated Pogue. He wants recruits and their parents and support system to know that he is available and interested in building a real relationship with his athletes, beyond talking only about football. The goal is to have a good organic relationship that includes the parents and those that are crucial in the student’s upbringing, Pogue said.
This year’s Auburn team is full of leaders, Pogue added. These players are bringing strong abilities and are successfully making the team a player-led team. The team has been started doing walkthroughs, slowing things down and study the plays while perfecting their moves in slow motion. Once the players return to full-speed training, they will be that much better for perfecting the minute details of the plays.
This interview with Pogue can be found, along with all the JBoy Show podcast episodes, on Anchor, iTunes/Apple, Spotify, Google, Breaker, Overcast, PocketCasts, RadioPublic or YouTube.
Called the “realest SEC podcast around” the JBoy Show burst on the podcast scene in April 2020, delivering an in-depth look at Southeastern Conference (“SEC”) sports with an emphasis on the SEC West. With topics ranging from recruiting and real-life athlete experiences to a multi-episode series honoring legendary Auburn football Coach Pat Dye, the JBoy Show has already been ranked as one of the top-10 sports news shows on Apple Podcasts.
