- With Sun Belt teams gaining coveted TV spots this season, there are no excuses for the media not to be talking about college football
- While Alabama is Brando’s highest-ranked team, he doesn’t see the team going undefeated
- Big Ten games would definitely make for more entertaining college football season
Fox Sports national commentator Tim Brando joined Jake Crain on The JBoy Show’s Sept. 17 episode to discuss the Sun Belt, SEC and the Big Ten mess.
The two jumped right into the conversation, discussing the upsets from the Sun Belt week one. Coastal and ULL dominated physically. Louisiana Lafayette played well and beat a ranked team. Three-row teams out of a group of five from the conference were all televised with great windows.
“There is no excuse, in my opinion, for the media that is going to be commenting on it come Monday not to have seen the games,” said Brando. “And to use blanket stereotyping and just dissing the Big 12 and not giving any credit to the Sun Belt is so very typical of the way college football is covered on a national basis. I think it’s an embarrassment to our industry. I think it shows where college football is in the mindset of those in positions of influence within our industry. And yet it is consistently the second-ranked television sport in America today.”
Brando has made it a point of emphasis that college football should not be overlooked. The Sun Belt not getting the credit it deserves is a disservice to college football as a whole, he noted. The schools are currently getting coveted TV windows.
After talking the Sun Belt, JBoy moved the conversation to the SEC. “I don’t see a team outside of Alabama that can go undefeated,” he observed, asking what Brando thought. Brando replied, saying he believes LSU can defeat Alabama at home and that Alabama, which is still his highest-ranked team, is going to have a hard time playing an undefeated season.
The discussion also touched on the challenges of recruiting during the COVID pandemic, which is presenting challenges for every team across the conference.
Regarding the Big Ten, there have been reports that the conference will be playing some games. Both men agreed that adding Big Ten games would definitely make for a more entertaining college football season. The rivalry between north and south is missed right now without the teams playing.
By returning to play, the Big Ten has the opportunity to salvage some inventory and income, as well as give teams a chance to earnt a berth in the playoffs.
“When you take a vote on something of that magnitude,” stated JBoy, “that decision affects everyone.” JBoy did note that he was disappointed at the lack of transparency surroungind the voting and decision-making process. Brandon agreed, pointing out that that is a problem in college athletics across the board.
