Kentucky Races Ahead with Plans to be a World-Class Technology Center

Kentucky is already well-known for its bourbon, as well as its most famous annual horse race, the Kentucky Derby. Soon, it may be just as celebrated as a world-class technology hub, as organizers of a soon-to-be-held gathering on decentralization are about to bring innovative, pioneering, disruptive startups to Louisville, the state’s largest city.
Run for The Unicorns is a networking forum on the future of fintech, cryptocurrency, blockchain, the sharing economy, the future of work and how these developments are disrupting contemporary culture (www.RunfortheUnicorns.com). It will be held April 29-May 4, 2019, to coincide with the Kentucky Derby Festival. The Kentucky Derby – “The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports” – takes place on Saturday, May 4.
Andrew Prell, CEO of Convergence and host of the Run for The Unicorns conference, thinks that the Kentucky Derby Festival can have an economic impact in Louisville surpassing that of the South by Southwest (“SxSW”) extravaganza of film shows, musical performances, talks and conferences, held annually in Austin, Texas. Attended by about 200,000 people over 10 days, SxSW generates an estimated $315 million in economic activity ($1,575 per person), while the Kentucky Derby Festival, which attracts about 1.2 million visitors over its two weeks, creates just $128 million ($106 per person). The SxSW festival has been credited with making Austin, since 2015, the top destination for startups, outpacing Silicon Valley (http://nnw.fm/uJM72).
Run for The Unicorns will highlight the hottest things in IT right now, including virtual & augmented reality and blockchain, as well as developments in fintech. Shark Tank will hold an open casting call on Monday, April 29th, 2019. Keynote speakers for the event include Rick Tumlinson, founder of Space Fund, which is offering the world’s first space security token; Tyler Adkison, a co-founder of investment fund BlockTerra; and Jon Najarian and Andreea Porcelli, the people behind the Evergreen marketplace.
